The manner in which the game engine was developed reflects that. There appear to be just two categories of NPC that you can encounter, ally or enemy. This is why my fleet plays ground the most. At least ground STF's are designed to reward stuff other than DPS. Engineers have advantages in some places and SCience in others, not all Tac.

Most people don't roll a Tac and fly and Escort. All you need to do is fly around the various sectors for 5 minutes and you'll see far more Cruisers, Warbirds, etc then you see Escort-types. Most PvPers? Possibly, but they're a fraction of the total fan-base.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

I don't feel the game needs the classes to be removed. However, the game is becoming less and less about the need for different classes than it is about reputation and dilithium grinding. If those are the only things Cryptic/PWE care about, then having 3 classes or 1 doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

Actually. PvP is where you will actually find Science Officers and Vessels as it is the only place they have a role. Many Warbirds are escort-types.

I have to agree with this one.. I mean whats the point if everyone pics tac because it so much more dps.. at least with suggestion you can custom design your captain to lean against sci, tac or eng abilities. I find often that I remake same character in all 3 or simply delete one since I didn't like the dept choice for this particular character. The kits would still be there.. and you could choose which one you want to use.. either its more tac or sci or eng,.. bot all in one. Like in real life ..

A better argument would be that we need more than the current 3 abilities at each level to choose from and we need more balance between them. The class abilities we have now are not balanced.

TL/DR:
Arguing that the proposed changes would be imbalanced and people would all choose the same OP abilities is arguing that things would be as they are now. Not much of an argument.
Actually... think about it. If people are allowed to choose anything instead of picking one of the existing 3 classes... the EVERYONE would be the same. Not just every Tac being the same or every Engie. EVERYONE. We may have cookie cutter builds now, but that's 3 different builds based on the classes. We do away with classes... there's gonna be only one uber build to rule them all.

And for the record, my main is a Tac who flies a Cruiser. See my Sig down there.

And in regards to ground stuff... Physicist, Enemy Neutralization/Romulan Fabrication, Fire Team kits. ^^
