Thats pretty crappy then, because its not a "minor" boost I get to say the least...to be missing out on ALL those massive bonuses, would severely cripple a lot of people I would think...

Way to assume the worst. You're really helpful!!!

I have a hypothesis: the ship improvement skills also improve the innate abilities you get as you level up. For example, sensor scan is acquired by all SO's at level 8 and that improving the skill Science Vessel Captain will improve its perception and damage resist debuff bonus.

You're whining about the unconfirmed and assuming its true. BRAVO!!

Note that only escort skills qualify your captain to train BO skills.

Also, the Escort skill-augmentation properties are only known because people were looking for them. Guess what? They were trying to find them in the other ship type skills too.

Either the effect is so completely obscured in the documentation that it can't be determined even when examining the supposedly linked skill, or the effect doesn't exist.

I've been around since CB, and my observations tend toward the latter.

"Cruiser" will affect all subsequent cruisers.

"Heavy cruiser" will affect that and only that.

I'm sorry but no, only tactical captains get the benefits from their captain skills.

Here's how your hypothesis fails... Sensor Scan is modified by Operations, Sensors, and Sensor Array just like you'd expect. Now I could go through every science captain ability one by one, but it's easier to just say they all use the science tree skills.

The engineering captain works much the same way, Rotate Shield Frequencies is modified by Engineering Training, Shield Maintenance, and Shield Performance. Again, all the engineering captain abilities use the engineering tree skills.

Confirmed enough for you?

I wish the skill tree was more coherent. Too little information.

Ok so if I read Taeyon right, I don't have to worry as an Eng flying an Escort because because even if I put points in to Cruiser, it wouldn't effect my skills anyway. Only a tactical officer flying in a Non-escort would have to worry about that?

The captain skills are very vague as others have described. There's an arbitrary value increment for everything but how does that actually affect our abilities? for damaging attacks is it a straight 1 to 1 ratio? what if it's not a damaging attack like many of the science abilities. How effective are these skills?

The ship and weapon skills are absurd as mentioned too. They are too specific which causes them to become obsolete the moment you move on to another ship or higher tier weapon. Yet, players can't horde points because they must spend points to reach the next rank.

My hope is that the skill tree will see a rather large overhaul and after that is done all players have their skill trees wiped and refunded the point value to redistribute in the new skill tree.
God willing on the point wipe.

Correct.

Doesn't it feel good to have such a well-designed, balanced, and consistent skill system?
