USS Tarawa

Tarawa is an atoll in the pacific which includes Betio Island, the site of the first amphibious landing under fire in the pacific theater of WWII. It was almost an unmitigated disaster for the US forces. The landing was scheduled for the lowest tide in nearly 50 years, which meant the Higgins boats were halted nearly 1000 yards out from the beach by the protecting coral reef. Marines had to wade through chest deep water under fire for that 1000 yards.

If you would like more information about the battle,I suggest reading "Utmost Savagery" by Colonel Joseph H. Alexander.

Let us hope a smart and educated citizenry, and ideas of justice and even moderation within a population, can help society have the developed skills to have the best chance of avoiding hot wars in the future, and even the present. So such things only occur rarely in the future.

USS St. Kilda (prononced Saint Kilda)

A football club in the Australian Football League who have a rather lacklustre record but have always been among my favourite clubs even if I never fully supported them until last year when I converted to them in the middle of their 2nd greatest season.

If allowed I might make that a theme of my federation ships with my Science ship being called the USS Everton.

Though my 1st tier ship for my science officer is called the USS Ignorance.

Because I'm rather ignorant of what I'm going to do with my science officer and science ship.

They may think that absence of money in Starfleet means some kind of utopian, post-capitalist society but I laugh at that. On the USS Enlightenment, trade is recognized as the highest form of respect between intelligent, rational life forms. A gold plate mounted above the main deflector array reads "A is A."
I've been tempted to name my character Henry Roark and fly the Stanton, the D'Anconia, or even the Rand.

USS Argonaut, named after several RN ships of the same name. Coming up next will be either USS Ceylon or Leander.

I've got an alt char, named Gordon in command of the USS Scott Fitzgerald. It's probably an obscure reference but I have my reasons
