for anyone else using steam

you can launch the game directly without loading up steam , ever time cryptic patch the game it will mismatch with the file steam has and steam will delete those files and download the old ones

so to save yourself alot of ongoing trouble don't run the game through steam or add the STO client as a non-steam game and run it that way so it will never update.

you'll never get updates for STO through steam they all come directly from the cryptic servers

(If your having trouble with that download the stand alone client from this website and use that instead)

i am glad at this point i didnt go with steam...but a curious question, can you not launch the game without steam? if you was online playing before you should only need a small patch from the main server. I have heard others in this type of post say to turn off steam completely and just use the game once installed.

Well, Steam puts an icon on your desktop with the name "Star Trek Online" and clicking on it starts Steam automatically before it starts the game itself. So you get to update the game through Steam before you can use it.

But it has this issue of deleting your client. Best thing is to fine the Star Trek Online file from the folder of the game and use that as launcher and delet the icon Steam put on your desktop so you don't confuse yourself in future.

I have Windows XP so I can't even recover the files. Still downloading the client from this afternoon.

If having to redownload a game causes such an impact perhaps you should consider a physical copy next time or upgrading your internet...
I bought it through steam, had to redownload it just like everyone else and it took less than 2 hours. Hardly anything to be angry over.
