Hey guys,

Not sure if this was answered before or not, but I wanted to poise the question.

Let's say after making the rank of Lieutenant Commander I decided to go with a Constitution Class (Engineering) vessel and then level up my skills to accordingly. Then, once my character made rank of Commander, I decided to go with an Akira Class (Tactical) vessel.

Would there be any cons in doing so? It appears that you level up your skills for that specific class of ship only. But if I pumped all of my skill points into the Constitution class, then did the same once I got the Akira Class, would I be "behind" so to speak than another Captain that went strictly tactical from the beginning?

You will be able to respec your skills later, but yes if you put points into cruisers and cruiser class ships then swap to a tactical, your not going to be as effective

Even when I level up and buy the next tier ship?

Because it seems like I can just start putting my points into that vessel tier instead, once I reach it. I'm not talking about buying a second ship while I'm playing at that same rank. (i.e. switching from Constitution to Rapier Mid level), I was talking about switching once I was able to purchase the next tier ship.

You would still be at a small disadvantage because you will have put the broad improvement points in cruisers which will increase all of your cruiser skills, but if you switch at commander level and continue with the new type until admiral it probably won't make a huge difference.

Ok, Bear with me here:

Starship command (t1 skill)= Effects all ships
Crusier Captain (t2 skill)= Effects all Cruisers only
Heavy Escort Captain (t3 skill)= Effects only t3 Escorts

thus, you will only benifit from the first and 3rd skill, compared to someone who trained:
Starship command, (all ships)
Escort Captain, (all escorts)
Heavy Escort Captain. (t3 escorts)
who will have all 3 skills effecting them (these bonus stack, however the t3/t4/t5 skills are for specific ships and thus dont stack)

thus you will be slightly slower and weaker than a pure escort captain.

sorry if im missunderstanding you?

Okay Evalissa, that makes more sense.

So would it be safe to assume that in T4, T5 and T6 it'd be safe to "bounce around" to other ship types? While in T2, and T3 you should stick to the same ship type?

Yeah, you could just start putting points into Escorts.

(there is no t6)

you would still lose the advantage of the second tier of skills (Escort captain/Cruiser captain)
If your dead set on flying multiple types, id recomend raising that second tier skill for each of the types you want. its cheaper and will improve every ship of that class.

What i believe most people are doing is trainign starship command, one t2 skill and one t5 skill.
You may be able to jiggle points aroudn to raise 2 or 3 t2 skills, but id advise training multiple t3/t4 skills as it will be wasted points as soon as your not flying that exact ship

Sorry im not very good at exsplaining it lol.

IS there a reason you want to fly the cruiser at 2 and the escort at 3?

Well there's two reasons.

1) I was planning on, in a higher level, having a Tactical Ship and an Engineering ship. My main Character is a Tactical officer, so I wanted to take full advantage of that.

2) I don't like the Heavy Cruiser Designs, to be perfectly honest, so I wanted to jump to Tactical for a rank. I like the Constitution, then I wanted move to Tactical before going back and selecting a Galaxy Class, Sovereign Class and so forth.

Then what i would recomend would be:
Max Starship Command (t1)
Max Crusier Captain AND Escort Captain (t2)
Ignore heavy Cruiser/Heavy Escort
Ignore Exsploration Crusier/Tactical Escort

at t5 you can decide if you stil lwant to fly both types, and then you can put in 8 points into one each of the cruiser and escort t5 ships

this will give you maximum efficency with your skillpoints.

Anyway im off to bed now, hehe, hopefully someone else will come in and give their opinion too so you can get a broader view

good luck
