Since "General Gameplay" is choked with flames about server outages, I am forced to post my question here.

Has anyone bothered finding out if skill points cap? I am wondering about skilling up before reaching Admiral and whether or not it would be in my best interest to advance slower in the interest of maximizing skill levels.

During Beta I got to Lt.Commander, so I know skills are unaffected by that rank (lvl 1 skills are still 50, lvl 2 skills 100)... but what about higher ranks? Can I still maximize my lvl 1 skills for 50 points when I am a Captain? ...And will I still accrue skill points when I am Admiral?

In short, I need to specialize now if I want to specialize a Space warfare team and a Ground warfare team... crossovers will be possible, but unlikely.

There is a cap. Check out http://sto-builder.binarybit.ch/index.php for a character builder. Keep in mind that the data is all from Beta, so until we get people actually at max rank in live it's not guaranteed to be accurate.

Just take a look at the builder. The first tier has a lot of room for skills, you can take just about everything. As you advance in the tiers it gets harder and harder to generalize culminating in the last tier where you can only max one skill (you get 17 Points for abilities).

Are we sure that 60700 is still the cap? I guess we will know when someone makes it to admiral, or perhaps the progression will change sooner, who knows.

Good thing we got that builder already but I rather hope we get more to spend in Admiral level cause those seem not enough (more in general would be nice too). I guess speccing a char will be pretty tough

There is a cap as has been mentioned, but I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about min/max builds for a while since one feature of new released MMOs is frequent skill adjustments. Its smart to put your points into things you'd like to do at level cap (ie. if you plan on flying a science ship, don't pump points into escort) but a well rounded build likely won't be a mistake compared to a min/max one that gets screwed over when that skill you just pumped gets nerfed. Respecs are also coming, though likely at a cost. A decent general rule is to put points into things that affect a number of other skills in general. People don't know all the interrelationships yet....for example I've seen posts that say avoid the ship specific skills since they don't help the next ship up. I've seen others that say thats wrong since those same skills buff things like attack patterns and the passive buff there makes them more than worth it. Pick what you think would help you and don't worry about every point at least until the game is better understood.
