Ok everyone is *****ing and whining in one way or another about the lack of or the inclusion of a death penalty. I agree this is quite a tough debate, as you cannot really have a SP loss (too many whiners), loss of ship completely makes it exciting but more EVE based, whilst no death penalty seems a little far fetched.

So how about this for an idea...

We have a seperate instance on the server to hold "those in limbo". Instead of ships being olibterated, ships become non combative and warp out of danger to this "shared instance" whereby they are removed from battle for a period of time (id say 1-2 minutes is enough to avoid boredom). I really feel this could work...

any thoughts guys?

I actually think it would work. It would be akin to a corpse run. I have always been a fan of xp loss as a death penalty. I know most don't agree but I like having something a little more at stake. I think the thought of losing your ship was what kept eve interesting for me. I'll be the first to agree that ship loss wouldn't work well for this game though.

Better Idea... implement the death penalty as it was designed. Until then all crew aspects of the game are left unfinished.

Because it is busted ass. Torpedoes still wipe out half my crew through full shields and full hull. It was hilarious in OB to fly an escort with 2 living crew.

So your idea of a death penalty is a STO version of purgatory?

I think of the current death system like this. Every time a players character dies they take over their character is a parallel universe where they did not die. Maybe their warp core explodes causing a time loop of some kind and they can go through it repeatedly until they learn what is going on. Kind of like the TNG episode "Cause & Effect.

This also would not require any new code.

The best idea I saw for a death penalty was having you dead in space where you fell, and having to wait for the ship to repair sufficiently enough to get under way again. There was a well thought out long thread about it last week, I'll see if I can find it...

edit* can't find the thread, maybe it was from closed beta, too bad, it was easily the best idea. Having to wait for your ship to repair, or an ally could come alongside and tow you to safety and/or aid in repairs (engineering team you). You would be invulnerable and unable to attack for a specific period of time while being repaired.

It was, IMHO, the best combination of canon and sensibility I've read regarding a DP.
