Tell me... what other MMO has released with these factors:
- Based on an IP going back 40 years
- Uncertain economic times
- An IP that was nearly dead upon project start, rejuvenated less than a year prior release
- A game offering two distinct play styles (space and ground)
- An IP that has had historically poor-quality games based on it

You speak as though this is just a run-of-the-mill MMO; that nothing is different and there aren't radical unknown variables. Every MMO is unique in some way, and this one is unique in many ways. Uniqueness adds risk. Risk makes money handlers nervous.

Besides the points above, given the game's shaky development history and the state of the economy, I find it completely understandable that they acted conservatively. Nobody wants to lose money these days.
