By the time my free month of AO was up, it felt like I spent most of launch month looking at the patcher.
EQ's SoL launch was borked too. Nobody, including Sony/Verant realized that their big overhaul meant software emulated modems could no longer play their game, LD's and D/Cs were commonplace, and even old world zones were having fun graphic issues. COH Infinity server rubberbanded like a **** for the first week or so, with Devs telling players to use a manual /sync command to help reduce the problem.
WoW was outright miserable for the entire launch quarter with slapdash fixes, queues created ,removed and re-created again.
I'm not a big fan of the STO crashes, but I've played through worse. The smoothest one I think I experienced was Guild Wars.
AO has been pretty much labeled as the worst launch of any MMO ever. Server never being up, no one could stay logged in for longer than 5 minutes. It was unplayable.
STO is going down constantly, I have barely been able to complete quest before being kicked out and losing all progress. Lag so bad that you can't zone sometimes without being kicked out. Combat lagging and rubber banding like mad, and NOW, a queue system. That I have sat over 30 minutes at the same location, 55, and it will not move at all.
I was been around for both, and STO is quickly catching up to AO, the thing is, in 2 days, more people will buy the game and it will become worse. I think it's very possible, that STO may very well be known for the worst MMO launch ever.
...you have got to be kidding.
Hell, for SWG, there was no "Day 1" because their Oracle backend kerploded.
It's annoying right now, for sure, but no way would I label it worst, approaching worst, or even 'lousy'.
