<In a Cryptic Conference Room>

Ladies and Gentlemen, We have grossly underestimated the interest in Star Trek Online and will be unable to meet the demand on Tuesdays Launch day. It will be met with thousands of users being unable to play a game they paid for. We need to put a positive spin on this. Any Suggestions on how to polish this turd?

1. Publish a statement to the community, with some GD information!

2. Bring down the servers.

3. FIX the servers.

4. Publish a statement to the community, with an apology and more information.

5. Bring the servers online for everyone to play!

it's just beta.
it's just head start.
it's just launch day.
it's just launch week.
it's just the first month.
it's just the first 6 months.
it's just the first year.
So true

I think Atari is to blame , and launch should have been at least another two months away.

On the list of problems for a new MMO to have, "way more people want to play this than even our wildest estimates" is pretty near the best one to end up with.

Note that the last AAA MMO that had this problem seems to have survived it; last I heard it had 11.5 million subscribers...

Delaying the launch date will be hard, because it would be contractually very costly to do so.

Instead, what I expect is that it will launch retail on Tuesday and have a lot of downtime and rely on the people in the community to tell everyone to shut up and put up with it.
