I'm really HOPING that a login queue is a temporary emergency fix to overloaded servers. While I don't necessarily agree with the logic, I can see the logic behind, for example, 5000 active users with fewer server stability issues being a better choice than unlimited users with excessive server stability issues. Of course the ultimate solution is to increaser server capacity, but I can easily see that not being able to be done over a weekend due to manpower issues and delivery schedules from vendors. Of course it sure seems as if Cryptic drastically underestimated how much server horsepower they'd need. I'm beginning to think the hamster powering their servers has been eaten by a tribble.

2:20 PM PST - ok, I'm now in the game in Regulus sector space. Apparently, the numbering on the login queue is screwed, but the queue itself is moving much faster.
There are going to be queues for a long time, I suspect.
The issue is, how efficient will they be?
I don't mind being in queue for 5-10 minutes. If the queue will be 20-30 minutes, its time to expand and add more servers (not shards...the single shard will work just fine, but there will need to be more servers supporting the shard). I also understand that there will be more players at launch than in 3 months time. But this is headstart. There should be less players now than there will be come Tuesday (theoretically).
Well if this happens on Tuesday I'll get ticked off. Right now, my hope is that Cryptic looks at this and fixes the issue by then. I mean, this is only the pre-order people on the servers. Once retail hits expect more people.
This game really needs more than a single server.
In fact, with the instanced architecture, they don't need to have more than one server since all the instances can be balanced on all the hardware available. In theory, they just need to add machines in their cluster. If it is true, it is just a matter of hardware investment.
I prefer to have one server only because you don't have to switch from one to another to retrieve yours friends. No, definitely, this system of instances is the good one for this game.
