# 1 Which Escort?
12-09-2013, 06:05 PM
Which fleet escort would be best for a high DPS ship? fleet patrol escort, fleet tactical escort retrofit, or the fleet advanced escort? Opinions?
There is about as much water on Earth now as there was three billion years ago. But while the amount of water has remained static, the amount of tequila and Triple Sec available for the making of Margaritas has expanded enormously. So you see, we have made progress after all. ~Anonymous

Excellent question! My opinion:

I personally like the Blockade Runner (Fleet Patrol Escort). It has neat visualizations and is quite versatile. If you dont have the fleet marks yet, consider a Mirror MVAM; it has the same layout/specs of a VA-level Patrol escort with the added bonus of MVAM.

Just a thought - and simply MY opinion. I'm sure many people might say the Defiant is superior. Your mileage may vary.

DPS being a function of weapons and tac consoles, you are looking at the Fleet Tactical Escort Retrofit or the Fleet Advanced Escort Retrofit, since both of those have max weapons (4/3) and tac consoles (5). The former handles better, has a smaller profile, and can use a cloak if you buy a c-store ship that has the console.

If you include c store ships, then Andorian Kumari Escort offers the highest dps in an affordable price. It is equivalent to a fleet ship (10 consoles + stats), has 5 tactical console slots, has 5 fore weapons (in expense of an aft), and a whopping 9 tactical bridge officer slots!
Your only concern is survivability.

That being said the new (and free) Plesh brek Heavy Raider seems to come close. Similarly it has 5 tac console slots, but lack a fore and an aft weapon. However, you can potentially fit as many tactical bridge officers you want (ideal number is 8 - 2 attack patterns, 2 cannon, 2 torpedo/beam overload, 2 tactical team). It's magic comes from the flanking bonus, which works as a damage multiplier to boost your final dps.

Hope this helps!

I always liked the Advanced Escort. It has 3 Sci boff slots to cover what I consider the 'almost necessary' powers of Polarize Hull, Hazard Emitters and Sci Team. Those cover just about any debuff you get hit with. Not really helping your DPS, but maybe help you last a bit longer.

Being a big fan of free things, I would say hold off buying a fleet ship and give the Breen raider, or destroyer, a try first. The Chel Gret is a very good 'escort'. And there is still plenty of time to get the 1000 autographs. You might even be able to transfer your toon to Tribble after getting 1000 and buy one on Tribble to test drive it before deciding.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have stuff to rant about on the forums!

Or...you could spend a couple hundred EC on the exchange and get a Mirror MVAM!

Depends on your playstyle preferences.

Fleet Patrol is a well-rounded ship with a bit of versatility. Fleet Tactical and Fleet Advanced are both stuck with 3 tactical bridge seats which kind of betray their 5-tactical console nature(which promote going full DHC). The Lt. Commander science on the Advanced is quite nice for Gravity Well, Tractor Repulsors or Hazard Emitters 3, but most people swear by the Fleet Tactical.

For Completeness:

The Aquarius.. should probably be classed as a raider and given flanking.. it doesn't really compete with the rest of the lineup.

The Fleet HEC is a very solid ship if you can work around the slower turn rate. Its hanger gives it a lot of extra potency(either offensively or defensively) and the Lt. Commander Engineering makes it a tough ship to bring down. Being only a 4 tactical console escort with 3 tactical bridge seats, it is comfortably complimented with torpedos.

I've had good experiences with both the Fleet Patrol Escort and my absolute favorite: the Blockade Runner Retrofit. Both are escorts with a little bit more survivability, although they can't match the 5-tac-console escorts for dps. The Steamrunner also comes with a handy shield console, and you hardly notice its slightly lesser turn rate compared to the other main escorts. Check out the topic on it in the Fed ship forum for more info.

If you can afford to stack one of the more fragile escorts with defensive eng and sci consoles you can go far with them, but I prefer the sturdier ones because they are less likely to cost you respawning time, and allow you more leeway to stock some universal consoles instead of armor.

If you want a cheap option, I'd definately start with trying out the mirror versions of the various escorts, as they can be obtained from the exchange for bargain prices. Even if you end up not liking them, they?ll not cost you much for a trial run. The Blockade Runner is the only one that will definately cost you "real" money, as it?s only available through Steam.

I've been playing less than a year so some of the acronyms elude me...which ship is is the mirror MVAM?

Unless I missed it I'm not sure which ship is the Aquarius? Is the fleet HEC the fleet heavy escort carrier?

EC is not a problem, and I can pretty much buy any c-store ship, furthermore unless it's a special ship costing high millions I can pretty well buy it, and since I had a lot of lobi crystals, I used them to buy the Chel Grett...was that a good purchase?

Yes, the HEC is the Heavy Escort Carrier. MVAE/M(Multi-Vector Advanced Escort/Module) is the "Advanced Escort".

Aquarius is the assault ship you can detach from the Odyssey with the Tactical variant's console. With the introduction of the Fleet system about a year and a half back, the Aquarius(and Ho'Sus from the Klingon Bortasqu) were made into actual ships you can acquire through fleets. They're both very fragile glass-cannons.

As for the Chel Grett.. it was probably a bit of a rip-off to use lobi for the portraits. That said, the Chel Grett is a very good Destroyer with a lot of flexibility. It's become a bit outclassed by the new Fleet Chimera and Peghqu Destroyers, but it is still one of the better 'tanky dps' ships out there.
