So, I have been thinking alot about what class of Ship I want to play. I didn't get far in OBeta, didn't even make it to LtCmdr (thats what lvl 10 is right?) so i never got to try out the other ships, however I do know I want to be an engineer for the ground portions. I am not shoe horned into a cruiser am I? Could I still fly an escort, or would I be gimped, I know it is an option but is it a big deal to cross classes like that?
Thanks Xaintrix, I'm coming from WoW so minmaxing was the name of the game. Good to know I won't be boned for eng/esc, it seems to me to be a pretty sweet option seeing as how there is no real aggro table or tank as it seems, a litte bit of bonus survivabilty seems good to me.
I love engineer on the ground though, reminds me of playing a ful tech in mass effect.
Actually it`s like WoW, if you really want to be good at something you have to stick to your class/ship. Of course you can fly a tac as an eng, but don`t hope to do damage like a tac/esc. You are missing some Captain skills which scales drastically with your ship. You also miss a few Rank III abilties for your BO`s, which isn`t quite out yet if you can get them elsewhere (rare BO) or get it trained from someone else.
Well it`s not quite like WoW, and escort CAN heal better then a rouge with bandage but you have to really decide want you want to play, and where you want to be in that game.
What kind of abilities will i be missing out on? All i can see in the space skill set is attack pattern alpha, all the rest of them are ground based. Am i missing something here? Is attack pattern alpha that big of a deal?
It`s an flat % multiplier (20 or 40? can`t check right now) and with all the BO skills, that`s a large summ of damage. I`m not sure about the other skills right now, but one was resistence reduce but i don`t know how this stacks with others. What do you get as Eng to boost DPS? Nadion Inversion maybe, the question is, can you pump out enough weapon power, because cannons don`t use that much, so my guess would be no. EPS transfer? Well it does increase powerlevels, but you should have at least 110 minium in an esc already, and 125 is maximum, so i don`t really see a way how you can get that missing DPS out of the eng skill, because they are more designed for Cruisers.
See, i don`t say, you can`t play that way, i just say, if you one of these player who like to play a little better then just the average, because it`s fun for them to play good, you should ponder about that choice or risiking level a new char later, because you didn`t liked it that way.
Paris Teta, you're right -- the OP wouldn't do as much damage as an engineer captaining an escort as if he were a tactical officer captaining an escort. However, he'll have things that will help keep him in the fight against some attention; miracle worker to counter bleed-through damage, and rotate shields to keep the shields up under fire better. So the point is, while he won't top the burst-damage numbers, there's nothing saying he can't be competitive in utility over a fight; after all, he might weather enough more fire to avoid having to respawn before somebody kills the ship he's attracted fire from.
