These skills need to give a slight boost to later tier ships or else people will skil them. And those who do spend points on them will be labled as "gimped"

Skills like Heavy Crusier Captain, Heavy Escort Captain, and Research Science Vessle Captain(Tier 3 Starfleet Training).

They give no bonuses later like nearly all the other skills.

1. Do you have a limited amount of points?

2. Can you not farm and kill stuff for more points if you need them?

I think the devs intend you in later game to mix and match what ship you will use for what type of thing you're doing (you can store your ships), so it makes sense to have BOs with mixed ship skills.

As far as am aware there are no benefits to ships out side of that tier so it can be better to spend the points where they will be of benefit to you at later ranks.

After all you will only benefit from the lower ship skills for a short period of time compared to potentially how long you may be captain of your tier 5 ship.

Ranking Heavy Escort Captain and Assault Escort Captain may give an increase to Attack Pattern Beta and Attack Pattern Omega Boff Abilities long term but I am not 100%.

You need the boff ability equipped to see what skills its linked to.

Someone else may be able to confirm if they have ranked up or have the skill on a boff they can use (press "p" and hover over ability and it will list the skills from skill treee related to the ability).

So if you want to use those abilities and improve them and you are an Escort Captain...could be happy days!

I believe your attack patterns(other than your BO abilities) come from the fact that you are a tactical officers.

So ya at the moment I do believe if you can just fight through the urge to improve your ship and save those points for other things that you will actually use in the future you may be better off.

At the same time I hope Cryptic can mention something about this.

1. YES
2. NO

worthless skills that take points away from top level skills you will cry at max level if you buy them.

SKILL CAP 60700 POINTS. Stupidest decision in a long long long line of stupid changes they made to this game during beta. This game was DESIGNED for unlimited skill points. It now has a cap. Skills that made sense to implement before, now HURT the player that buys them. That is all.

edit: p.s. those intermediate ship handling skills really really make the ship handle a lot better too. shame on cryptic for putting skills in game that will deliberately gimp a player at max level though with no retcon in sight. (and when retcons get here, expect to pay AT LEAST 15 dollars for them)

Ya limited skill points forces you not to buy these skills alone and just bite your lip and level up without them.

Then later on Cryptic will probably make them mean something and those who did not spend points may not get a free skill reset :-p

Ever since they made skillpoints limited there is really no use for half the skills in the game anymore.

Taking a specific ship skill past T3 will screw you over. Also if you plan on using stuff like Tricobalt weapons, tough luck sucka, the skill box just happens to be located in a place where you can't fill it without gimping your character to hell.

Basicly taking away unlimited skillpoints has destroyed the entire skill system.

Not only that, it also killed the long term motivation for many people. The endgame content is irrelevant if there's nothing to gain. And yes, the cap also means you have to create 1 char per ship per career to be at peak performance.

But well, that belongs into another thread ^^
