I do not have that great final blast as you would get with a torpedo, but my three MK II beam arrays burn through all I put them on. Anyone else doing this ?

I'm doubting between this or the two beam arrays in front and torpedo in the back.
Depends entirely on if it's PvP or PvE-

PvE, for tier 2 I would use three beam arrays (one forward, two aft), and one torp in the front. Try to keep the target in your forward broadside as much as possible, then turn the small distance to fire a torpedo at their fallen shield. With some skimming of power into AUX levels, and some good proactive flying, this shouldn't be too hard. This doesn't work as well once you get to tier 4 and 5, but at that point you have enough weapon slots to put a torp in the fore and aft.

With PvP, it's a different ball of wax, and would generally fly all beams, and never fly alone. Which you shouldn't be doing in PvP anyways.

I've found that at least 1 torpedo launcher makes things a little faster. The downside to 4 beam arrays is the power drain, although EPS devices can help counteract that to keep your damage up.

Personally, if I had to swap out my torps I'd use beam banks in the front to at least give me more "oomph" on the 90 degree arc for added beam damage, and beam overload could us that weapon potentially to cause even more damage.

I currently use the 1 torp forward/aft and just using turns to keep the enemy in the arc on my cruisers, but I am tempted to try the broadsides with all beams again to see how it goes. I'd suggest EPS devices though in engineering slots to keep the weapons level up.

I got them off the exchange in open beta, and got one as a drop. The common EPS ones are +1, which means you can essentially fire an extra weapon per +1 w/out power drain.

Thanks for the great advice. Currently my three beam array setup (miranda class) are working perfectly, I constantly fly sideways of the enemy using three beam arrays on them, it does deal out some great damage. Especially when I mix in beam overload.

I do miss the satisfaction of shooting out a torpedo (dunno always liked the idea), but beam arrays are so much better to use and have on a cruiser cause tactical position will be more and more difficult as the ships become bigger.

Bigger and slower. I may name my cruiser the USS Sloth this time around. That or the USS TooFatToRun

Did this in beta, will probably be doing either all beams or all turrets when I get my cruiser (still haven't tested the all turret setup). Cruisers turn slowly enough that you'll almost never get a torp shot in anyways, so why not go all beams . I think it's a lot of fun, looks cool too.

No mathematical theorycrafting here or anything, but these were my results from last night. LtC 6 using T2 Cruiser.

Before:
Fore:
1x Green MkIV Plasma Beam Array (77 Exploration Badges, 2nd Order)
1x Green MkIV Quantum Proton Torpedo Launcher (77 Exploration Badges, 2nd Order)

Aft:
1x Green MkIV Plasma Beam Array (77 Exploration Badges, 2nd Order)
1x Green MkIV Phaser Turret (77 Exploration Badges, 2nd Order)

Eng Consoles (Don't remember exact specs on these)
1x White MkIII Shield Regen Console
1x White MkIII Turn Radius Console

Tact Console
1x White MkIII Plasma (+10 Plasma damage)

Laurentian Fleet Action:
Placed 6th on the charts in final. @1600 points

I had a heck of a time trying to keep weapon energy up at an acceptable level. Full broadsides would keep energy levels between 75-85 unless I backed off the aft beam. It took me a while to work up a head of steam after coming out of full impulse.

After:
Fore:
1x Green MkIV Plasma Beam Array (77 Exploration Badges, 2nd Order)
1x Blue MkIV Disrupter/Plasma Hybrid Beam Array (Quest Reward)

Aft:
2x Green MkIV Plasma Beam Array (77 Exploration Badges, 2nd Order)

Eng Consoles
1x White MkIII EPS (+1 power transfer) (obtained from AH for about 800 energy creds...gotta be a steal)
1x White MkIV EPS (+1.2 power transfer) (also obtained from AH...about 2.5k energy creds...I consider it a steal as well)

Tact Console
1x Green MkIV Plasma (+15 Plasma damage)(77 Exploration Badges, 2nd Order)

Laurentian Fleet Action:
Placed 1st...by a mile. @3600 points (no crap...a 2k point increase). Beat 2nd place by about 1k points. Most winners I see are usually between 2.6-2.9k points. (That may be low for some of the better Escorts, but that is my experience...though my experience is admittingly low).

I could be back up to full weapon power from Full Impulse in about 3-4 seconds...while firing a front arc. With a full broadside, I never fell below 93 weapon power. The amount of sustained DPS she was putting out was incredible. Not very bursty, but very sustained.

Bottom Line:
Can't wait to get to T3 and see what I can line up. EPS consoles are where it is at for beam heavy cruisers.

I'm very happy to have read you guys comments and strategies. Thanks for all the hard work.

I couldn't agree more. I use 4x plasma beams mk IV in my excalibur and works great! I am going to start experimenting with turrets a lot more once I hit tier 3 and check out power usage.

A friend of mine confirmed that turrets are indeed boosted by putting points into Cannon skill, so I had a thought. What if you equipped all beams for your fore weapons and turrets for your aft weapons? That would give you a pretty powerful frontal assault arc and a still respectable broadside (although not as powerful as all beams) while leaving only your aft weaker. To my understanding (although I could be wrong) I don't think turrets drain from your power the way beams do, seeing as they count as cannons.

Thoughts?
