Why should there be gating? If someone wants to grind the same DSE to reach max level in max time, that's their business. Why someone would WANT to do that I don't understand. Makes no real sense to me. It's not like the women will be hanging all over him begging to fertilize their eggs with his superior seed. But then again, my understanding isn't needed. People do it because they want to; if they want to miss most of the content, that's THEIR business and it effects the rest of our game play in NO manner whatsoever.

And that's fine, but you need to figure out how fast you want players progressing through content and then prevent them from getting there any quicker than that pace - regardless of how much time they spend playing that character.

For example, only allow characters to receive a promotion once every fourteen days. Of course, then you need to provide the player with a plethora of things to do between rank-ups in the meantime without increasing the amount of work it takes to move from one rank to the next (otherwise you're just stretching out the XP-curve to intimidating lengths for the more casual players, which is what they were hoping to avoid in the first place). That means depending on other activities: pvp, crafting, reputation grinds, daily quests for credit rewards, increased social options, mini-raids for improved item rewards, deep space time-intensive exploration missions, etc. Just something to keep the fast levelers content and busy with until the next rank-up promotion period is available.

It doesn't necessarily have to be that, but it seems to me like it would be in the developer's best interest to have something similar in place. Because the alternative is to watch people reach Admiral in two days, hear them complain about the lack of end-game content, and then watch as they cancel their subscription.

Too late now, though.
Totally uneeded, ok it would stop people charging through, but for example I played in Closed and open beta, I did the content to Commander (21) so in headstart I knew I wanted to get my tier 2 ship as soon as possible and I knew how to play so the LT levels which are learning levels were uneeded. I got to LC1 in the first day but since then I only gained 3 more level and am LC4 right now flying happy with my little escort.

It would be exteremly annoying to wait 14 days to advance a tier, especially if we are talking about building and leveling an alt.

This happens in every MMO, I recall the day in EQ that the Beserker class came out, there was a max level within 24 hours and EQ was never a simple game to level in, but there are people who like and make it a matter of pride to burn through as fast as you can and some take months or longer to do the same, it happens.

It would be annoying *if* there weren't other in-game activities to spend your time on in the meanwhile. I covered that in the post you quoted, but you're completely glazing over it.

You're talking about something that didn't happen at launch. Nobody reached max level in 24-48 hours when Everquest first launched. Of all advancement models to compare leveling speeds to, that's probably the last one on the list of games you should be referring to. Most modern gamers and their "gimme everything now" attitudes would probably have a breakdown trying to level today in the old original Everquest.

I've been playing as much as I could during Headstart and I just barely made Lt. Commander, that's some serious playing to do that. I think I know where you can go for the points in order gain such points... but I agree with the other posters, who cares? It doesn't affect my game play at all and I doubt any rules were broken. Everyone I've talked with says that leveling takes too long.... I figure it's this side of just right and still fun to play.

From browsing the Exchange on Saturday (during Headstart) there were Mk 9 (Tier 5) rare items available. This suggests that there were Admirals 24hrs after Headstart began. Undoubtedly, the idiots spamming sales of energy and powerlevelling were in a continuous play loop...

If it's any consolation...chances are very good that they know less about the actual game than most Lt 6's =D
