# 1 Elitest Jerks for STO?
02-02-2010, 09:43 AM
I was just wondering if there is a site, or even a thread on this forum (I've found very little) that really goes into the most effective ways of fulfilling roles (damage, aggro etc.) and character development.

I can't say I really understand the game mechanics and fear I'll eventually get admiral and find my character is rubbish.

I'm most concerned about the 4 attributes you pick during character creation and class/ship combinations for the different roles.

In CB, the Dev's said that focusing on Space based traits and skills were for the best. I'm not sure if that holds true anymore, though.

I'm sure, as is always the case, that there were evenutally be a couple number crunching "Elitist Jerks" style sites. However, everything is still very much in flux at the moment and there is probably going to be some ongoing balancing for the next couple weeks while they figure out the weak spots/exploitable areas in the current matrix. Any site put together for this purpose would probably become almost immediately outdated and irrelevant.

Case in point was the last patch a couple hours ago which was described by Cryptic as "all back end stuff, so no patch notes." Most of that was probably server stability stuff, but I guarantee they're sifting through combat data and logs too and making minor tweaks to weapon damage/stats where they see problems. It's easier to do that now BEFORE there are websites which create expectations and people get vested in what they've got and what they expect.

We are really hoping they eventually put in place a method of "re-speccing" since the lack of character slots prevents much experimentation without trashing toons constantly.

I can say that from what I have seen alot of the trainable skills will be dependent on which BOff skills you plan to use.

It'll be a while before sites like that exist for STO, if at all. It takes a long time for the community to "break down" the game to really crunch numbers at that level. I can't say I look forward to it really.

On skills though, because of the way each rank has diminishing return, it's worth considering putting at least 1-2 ranks in anything that you use at all. It is sure not to be the most highly optimized build once all the info is crunched, but at least you won't find yourself gimped if you choose "wrong", and respecs are not in the game yet.

I'm in no way related to Cryptic but I have been a gamer for most of my life and even worked for Blizzard for damn near 3 years before I quit (right before TBC released) ... let me just first say that what you're seeing now isn't what you'll be seeing in a year from now. Even Wow, as much as Blizzard was able to finish and polish, was changed a lot within the first year of being release. The same goes for almost every MMO.

What you're seeing, or more to the point the lack of what you're seeing on the forums isn't because of an elitist attitude but more because of an ignorant situation as far as late game is concerned. Truth be told late game has not been properly tested by the masses or corrected by the bug reports from the masses. Because of that the final spec of you and your ship will not be solid until the game is finished. I also hate starting a sentence with the word, "Because." Prepositions, ass holes ... do you speak them?!

Anyway ... look at this game as what it really is. It's a very early release of a game with good promise. If Cryptic is worth it's weight in **** it will give you an easily accessible way right the wrongs you may have made because of their inability to reach a launch date. :p PS: Blame the Publisher, not the Developer. If the Devs had their way I'm sure they'd have another year toi iron out the bugs.

Anyway ... just give it time. It's a new baby. Give it time to crawl before it walks. WoW seems to be the golden standard but keep in mind Blizzard had the ability to delay release because it was it's own publisher. STO didn't have that luxury ...

I can't believe I'm defending a company I didn't even give my hard earned money to but there it is ...

For what it's worth ... I played a T3 ship up until 26 or so when I finally realized healing seems to be a sham ... shield restoration seemed to be lame. If anything it extended the life of a "tank" cruisers for a few seconds ... if that. Maybe it changes at the higher levels ... but I never got that high to tell.

Absolutely holds true. You can go afk in ground combat and let your BO's kill everything for you. IMO for min/max you want to go Alien then take:

Efficient:
+5 Starship Shield Efficiency
+5 Starship Engine Efficiency
+5 Starship Energy Weapon Efficiency
+5 Starship Auxiliary Systems Efficiency
Warp Theorist:
+10 Starship Warp Core Training

Then choose two of the following depending on your class and play style. As an engineer/escort I went Techie/Elusive to boost my Eng abilities and get a little more survivability, though could have easilly gone Accurate to get a bit more DPS.

Techie:
+10 Starship Engineering Training
Astrophysicist
+10 Starship Operations Training
Accurate:
+0.1 Accuracy
Elusive:
+0.1 Defense

Do you mean a science ship healing a cruiser? If so I agree, useless. Science ships should be debuffing enemies. A cruiser can keep itself alive litterally forever against a group of ships if built correctly. It may take a LONG time to kill everything, but they'll never die.

Thanks, that's what I was most concerned about. Also, you may have sort of answered my other real question there, I'm pretty sure I want to be an escort ship, does that mean I "should" go engineer, if so, why?
