Every game has gold sellers. It's just going to be easier to ban them given how characters are displayed with Account Handles. At least I hope it will.

Really? Maybe one day you'll actually realize that every MMO has some third party making accounts and trying to sell their goods. It's almost impossible to prevent it without eliminating the possibility of trading between people entirely, and that's no fun. All cryptic can do is get reports from players and ban the accounts those farmers come from. It's up to the community to prevent as much of this as possible. So good luck in your future failures. I will only guess you will be disappointed in the MMO genre altogether.

On a related note, has anyone actually replied to the sellers with a "The pursuit of monetary wealth is no longer a driving force in our society. Now bugger off."

I have!
They have not responded back though

To answer someone's question about to make energy credits:
Sell just about anything you get except for some hynos and shield charges for yourself. And when you sell it, sell it on Starbase to a Starfleet NPC. Selling in to your replicator nets you 40% of the item's value as opposed to the 50% Starbases offer.

Consoles and some weapons are best sold on the Exhange as you can get a decent return there. I usually sell commons for 80% of their value. This gets them sold quickly, makes more more credits then selling them to a vendor, and is cheaper on the buyer as he gets what he wants for less then a vendor will sell it for. Blues and greens go for a bit more, like 100% their value. But not the outrageous 100,000 for a common Mk3 photon torp I have seen.

I also use a mishmash of stuff, even at Lt. Commander. For example I still use a Mk 2 science console to give me some increased crew recovery.

These practices have allowed me to buy a science vessel and an escort in addition to my free cruiser as well as staying outfighted in the best weapons and equipment energy can buy.

Certain vendors will only trade badges for equipment. There's a few on Sol that will trade exploration badges for some nice gear.

...as far as the other badge types. Dunno. I found a base close to Klingon territory that will trade for them but, sorry, I can't remember the name.

Heheh...

Thanks. I'll have to try that.

I didn't notice that before. I'll have to keep that in mind.

For the most part I just use the replicator because it's easier than transwarping back to starbase. I can just sell what I don't need and get right back to missions.

I don't really buy a lot of gear anyway. My current ship is equipped with drops that seem mostly superior to the stuff I can buy.

What's harder to come by are the other currencies like the stuff you get from scans or various badges from combat or exploration. I noticed you can by some pretty nice weapons with that stuff.
Wait until you hit Lt. Com. The credits start rolling in. Anyone who pays real money for credits in this game is really a pathetic loser.

Personally I don't feel a need to buy energy. I have made a killing from the exchange just selling some drops I picked up, not to mention the vendor trash items. I have no need for purple or blue gear while I am leveling so by the time I get to max level I will have an absolute ton of credits and will buy my way to GLORY!

It boggles my mind that they're even bothering, energy credits basically form the atoms between systems in space as near as I can tell. Every once in a while I send an ensign out to scrape a few thousand off the hull.

On a more serious note I try to look at this as a good indicator for the long-term health of the game. If the gold-sellers are so gung-ho to carve out a market share in STO this early, they must think the game's going to do well.
