I.e. Are ship types/ character classes suited to or designed to work better with specific types of ships?

Tactical = Escorts
Engineers = Cruisers
Science Officer = Science....

Well, you get the picture.

Yes/No?

I don't think so.

Ships are matched towards what BOs you want to specialize in and have little to do with the skills you learn in my opinion (as in, I haven't seen any player skill specific to a ship class that was entirely dependent on your character class).

The answer is No. The main differences between the ship types are the role they are designed for (tank, DPS or support) and the number and type of BO's they can support. You can easily mix and match the ship types with the Captain types and still be fine. No choice is uber and no choice is gimped.

read one thread that talked about training your bo's. They said if your a tactical officer on an escort you going to have more tac bo's with higher ranked cons for them and since you can train your tac officers if your tact, then that would be a stronger choice to stick to your class of ships. How ever with all my digging on the subject I haven't found any other mention of it to form an option bout it myself. Either way I'm flying an intrepid with my tac officer b/c it's a beautiful ship

Technically speaking yes.

But ENG does great in an escort because of better survivability and I heard once in CB that Tac was helpful in Science ships for a little extra DPS but I'm not 100% sure.

As a general rule, I say do what you want to do and dare to be different and explore the possibilities. whatever suits your style.

I would assume this is correct. For example, if you reach rank 9 in certain science skills as a science officer, you can train your science bridge officers with a rank III power related to that skill. I also assume that there is probably no other way to get that rank III power, ie the bridge officer trainer probably doesn't have it.

That said though, it would be pretty hard to calculate wether or not Science Team III" is all *that* much better than "Science Team II" especially when you complicate things by admiting that if you don't have the one you would just fill the slot with some other power of the appropriate rank.

If there is any difference it is probably only subjective, though I'm sure as the game matures some min/maxers will come up with "math" that "proves" what's "best"
