02-04-2010, 12:08 AM
So as you must Guess I am a bored Wow Player. I have played pretty much all Mmo from Tabula Rasa and Eve to Ever quest and Wow.. i am looking for something New and fresh play.

So what i want to ask from the STO community so far is... What is the Reaction of this game?

is it fun?

Is it Interesting?

Is it easy to learn but Tough to master?

Is therea good balance of Away Team and ship stuff?

Is the Ship Customaztion really good or just reall generic?

Is the Ship Custom stuff really as diverse as the Website says it is?

So basicly I am bored of playing Wow... I want something new but i want to hear your Opinions about it first before i go waste my money on something. or if it is really good and worth the check out?

I have played wow since vanilla launched and I absolutely LOVE this game. It is a breath of fresh air that the MMO community so badly needs. Space is fun, away teams are a blast in a group with other people and once you hit level 11 and promote some of your away team, those become much more dynamic and fun too. I enjoy the planet stuff but it needs the most work. Cryptic isnt "done" yet. Its not as polished as wow but it has more potential than wow ever did.

The ship customization is more than adequate for me. You can mix/match between 3-4 different types in your class to put your ship together, but you stay in the realm of looking "star trek"... You pick your own registration number and name... and colors, material, etc... Plus, you level not only yourself, but you need to get gear for your ship as well as the members of your crew. So you are constantly looking for stuff and comparing it to what everyone has.

Expect it to be different... dont expect it to be as "done" as wow.... and read the boards to decide if you can deal with the stuff people are complaining about in order to have an awesome time in space. I dont think youll regret it personally.

the problem is everyone's opinion of a good MMO is different. The answers you want are not our opinions, they're really yours. Many people are enjoying STO... some are not.

But still, I think its fun and I think its interesting. Its easy to learn but to be honest its not all that difficult to master. Some parts of it are easy - some are more challenging.

My reckoning is that the split is about 70% space and 30% Ground missions.

Ship customisation is good. Everyone wants more ships and I'm pretty certain more will get added over time. At each rank you can select a science, escort or cruiser vessel and design a customised ship using parts from 3 ship classes within that Ranks ship tier and type. You can get some nice designs and are able to colour your hull, choose your hull material, windows and select a bridge layout from several preset bridges. As I say, its nice now and will get better over time.

I was a bored SWG player when I started playing WoW. I didn't care for it at first but it grew on me and ended up playing WoW for 5 years.

I got bored of WoW and tried Champions Online for 5 months. It was ok but severely lacking in content. I'm enjoying STO quite a bit. Sure there's room for improvement and polish but I'm a Star Trek fan and am legitimately having fun.

Definitely Understand. I am just trying to get a feel of what other people are thinking. i mean, i did not do that before i tried eve Loved eve but found out it actually took months to get skills to pilot Big ships. That killled for me. i know each game as it time sinks but actual months to get to the Big Capital Ships... dead.

Basically in wow.. I am not some super raider. I like to raid but not that into. i like the instances and enjoy playing with people. But I am not gonna spend months and months on trying to clear ICC. If that makes any sense.

To me wow is just more of the same thing. No really Variety or Newness to it... If that also makes sense.

I LOVED tabula rasa but it just died. which bummed me out.

so that is why i am asking around first.

Just for First Impressions...

make sure you're careful to who you take you;re advice from. don't trust anyone. even me.
this forum is plagued by Trolls. some from TOR, some just here to cause trouble, and some who were disappointed that the game wasn't just like star trek, so they have a personal vendetta against this game.
be careful, and the best way find out if you like it is to try it out.

I will send you a del taco code, it's good for two days of game play. don't put it in until you download the game, that way you do waist anytime. Download from here

It's worth a shot. I have a very geared protadin that I'm dropping to play this game. To go down the list:

1. Yes it is fun. It helps a lot if you know something about Star Trek - especially the TNG through Voyager stuff.

2. Definitely interesting. I just hit Commander and some of the missions make for interesting reading. You will probably want to actually read the missions - unlike WoW. You will need to read a few of them to know what to do next - also unlike WoW.

3. Basics are cake. A lot of the high-level stuff requires you to customize your ship/bridge officers to your play style. Unlike WoW, there is not a 'right' way.

4. ship/away team is about 80/20. The ship stuff is far superior so that is no bad thing.

5. Ship customization is unmatched. If you use the options in the advanced editor it will be very, very unlikely to find a ship that looks just like yours.

6. Again yes.

Some stuff you should know before even trying STO:

1. This game is still a little buggy. There are missions that don't quite work right. There are NPC ships that get caught in asteroids. Nothing game-breaking, but it is there.

2. Servers have been shaky. Granted actual release was Feb 2nd and it's been pretty much fine since then, but yeah.

3. Social interface is a bit clunky. Seeing your 'guild' and interacting with people is not as effortless as it is in WoW.

4. The 'auction house' is limited to 20 auctions at a time, rather than the AH taking a 5% cut. It also lacks a proper interface.

5. end game is a bit un-developed atm. They're planning to introduce 5-man 'raidisodes.' I'm not sure what that means exactly.

6. PvP is actually pretty cool, but greatly over-rewards dps classes (aka escorts)

7. Bottom line: the game is fun.
