Devs,

The upcoming upgrade of all existing science ships to have the secondary deflector is great.

Having read the description/concept of the secondary deflectors a thought popped into my mind: This is nice but how does this help the older tier 5 science ships that nobody uses because they've become obsolete console & officer slot wise?

The answer was simple: It COULD be the thing that brings back these older ships into use.

Let's take for example the good ol' Nebula. As a cruiser/sci hybrid it is highly versatile yet because its officer slots and console have lagged behind the newer tier 5 ships, it has become a very rare sight in space.

So, why not use these secondary deflectors to literally give these old ships a bigger boost than it gives newer ships?

Say, allow the older sci ships to mount two secondary deflectors?

or maybe add a specific bonus to these older ships depending on what 2ndary deflector type is equipped?

As Cryptic states:

"At the time of writing this there are currently 3 types of Secondary Deflectors. One focuses on healing and support Science bridge officer abilities (e.g. Science Team), the second provides benefits to control powers (e.g. Tractor Beam) and lastly third type enhances debuff and draining powers (e.g. Tachyon Beam)."

So, a 'support' , a 'crowd control' and a 'debuff' 2ndary deflector.

For the Nebula, give it a bonus based on that:

Support: shield heal abilities function as if the ship had +10 more power on the AUX power bar

Crowd Control: CC abilities have a +X% duration bonus (not potency, just duration).

Debuff: Debuff abilities receive an X% timer reduction.

Bonus types would differ between the older sci ships matching their design/lore.

These bonuses would put the older sci ships like the Nebula up on par somewhat with the more tactical-based ships (aka any of the newer ships..the game did turn dps-centric quite some time ago and sci abilities lost their dps potential). On par not with damage output but at least on par with science abilities to compensate.

Cryptic don't want to buff old ships (especially one they gave out for free) so that you don't have to pay cash for new ships.

From what I understand, all "science ships" will eventually be retrofit with secondary deflectors...

Just like all "raiders" will be retrofit with the Breen ship's flanking abilities...

Though when will this retrofit occur? Not sure. I mean, it was practically a couple of weeks (2 months at most) I think between Avenger's release (with the "prototype" cruiser commands) and the full retrofit of the cruiser lines.

Though it's barely been a month since the winter event ended, maybe the flanking retrofit shows up with 8.5?

Still at it. CBS "restrictions" fell by wayside with freebie Breen. Time to re-examine ENT and ToS at tier 5, repurpose the Connie into Sci and rebuild an Akira escort into the "NX". 6 "eras", spread evenly over all the classes...

The tier 3 was given for free not the Tier 5. Tier 5 of course, is the only thing that matters.

I rather doubt they'd give specific bonuses to older ships when equipping a Secondary Deflector, that's quite a bit of just QA to make sure all the bonuses work, and more chances for a random change to break yet another thing, all for limited return on investment.

BTW, the Nebula given away last year was T5 and even qualifies for a Fleet Module discount, the low level Sci giveaways were the Rhode Island and Phalanx(KDF).

I paid money for my Nebula but she's been sitting gathering dust for while now, it would be nice to take her out for a spin again.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it.

Missed this on my earlier post...

Who do I have to appeal to for a yellow flag, and a 15 page penalty - so this post gets buried in the bowels of the forum, never to be seen again...

From the tone of this post I'd almost be tempted to assign a certain "fanboyism" to, say, the Nebula, and see this as a blatant attempt to get "your" favorite class more representation in endgame (or more power to you).

Sorry. Class retrofits mean everything in the class gets the retrofit. Whether it's a year old Vesta, 2 year old orb weaver, or the highly popular Wells class as well as those Nebulas, Lunas, Intrepids, and DSSVs almost nobody flies...

Just to carry your logic to an extreme, what about giving the Excelsior's cruiser commands extra effect or longer range, just because the Excelsior was deployed to the C-Store pre-F2P, and perhaps, before even the Nebula you attempt to buff? Who cares that the Excelsior is already considered a very useful ship that can contend with the Avenger, etc., it needs more power just because it's "old".

And anyway, you didn't post the cutoff "age". Would my year-old Vesta get the extra deflector or powers? If not the Vesta, would the Wells or Orb Weaver get it, although they are practically pushing 2 years old?

What are you talking about? The Nebula they handed out for free was the t5 retrofit, the original was never given.
